Everyone has dreams which are meant to be fuel for us to chase our goals. There are lot of theories which argues about the beliefs and disbelieves of dreams all over the world. Some believe dreams are hidden or secret message from God. Some others felt that their dreams led them to discover their purpose on earth. Some people were haunted by horrifying dreams and exhausted; this sort of people remain awake all over the nights and they are afraid to sleep.
Interactions of God through Dreams
God has warned people on their dreams, we can find this on the Bible. God warned Abimelech in a dream to secure the wife of Abraham. God of Bethel warned Laban, father-in-law of Jacob, in a dream at night by warning him “Be careful not to say anything to Jacob, either good or bad” Gen 31:24. Joseph, the husband of Mary did what the angel of the Lord instructed him on the dream. When Solomon offered thousand burnt offerings, the very same night God appeared him in a dream , “Ask for whatever you want me to give you” 1 King 3:15. God Himself said that HE reveals things to prophet in a dream, “When a prophet of the Lord is among you, I reveal myself to him in visions, I speak to him in a dreams” Num 12:6.
Every when we blessed our friends or people so close to our hearts on their special days by wishing them “May all your dreams come true”. Haven’t their dreams really come true? we haven’t any regrets, if all our dreams really come true? When we think about our broken dreams, our hearts thud with bundle of regrets and laid us down with self-pity. Some of us might have been experiencing self-critical thoughts because of our broken dreams. We are not alone in this phase of life. We are having few of our biblical giants who have left their footprints before us. Their footprints are the reminders that we are not alone in this phase of life; some few victoriously crossed the same path where we are struggling enough to cross.
Jacob
Let us analysis the footprints of Jacob. When Jacob fled from his homeland, God Himself appeared him in a dream by promising, Gen 28:15 “I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have promised you”. How happy Jacob would have been after getting the promise from God when on his journey towards his maternal uncle’s house. Later He would have regretted for his plight for serving his uncle just like a servant. He might have unanswered questions which were pondering from his heart. He might have doubt about his father’s blessings as well as God’s promise on him. His father blessed him by saying “Be Lord over your brothers and may the sons of your mother bow down to you” Gen 27:29. What happened in his life was exactly contrary, Jacob was serving his father-in-law nearly 20 years; not like a master but like a servant. People of our era struggling hard to satisfy single wife but Jacob has to satisfy two wives and their servants. Jacob would have went crazy, when his wives underwent chicken fight. He might have fed-up on the unfulfilling dreams of returning to his homeland. His dreams and promises of God came to reality only after a lot of trials and brokenness. God is so faithful in all the way to Jacob. God took 20 years to mend Jacob to reach his dreams. Let us be courageous on our broken dreams. If our dreams are from God, it will surely come true on its appointed or God’s desired-time. Be Hopeful and Be cheerful!!!
Joseph
Joseph was mocked and nicknames as ‘dreamer’ by his own step-brothers. His step-brothers hated him for his dreams and they even plotted to kill him because of the dreams he had before, Gen 37:19 “come now, let’s kill him and throw him into one of these cisterns…. Then we’ll see what comes of his dreams”. Joseph would have begged his brothers for life when they threw him into cistern. He might have cried and wallowed while his step-brothers happily eating their meals. His sadist brothers sold him into Ishmaelite’s hands. Joseph was sold out by his step-brothers like a slave. How pitiable he might have been while he was taken to Egypt as a slave! Father’s pet turned as Potiphar’s slave; life can knock anyone down like Joseph. As a slave how difficult it would be when he took a stand for his own ethics, “how then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God” Gen 39:9. The woman who was tempted him to do sin was none other than his own mistress. The Bible has recorded that there are few slave girls and servants who obeyed their mistresses without having second thought or second chance; they are Hagar, Bilhah and Zilpah. But Joseph, a slave boy who had the boldness to stand up for his own ethics. As a result, his mistress claimed a false accusation and she was manipulating things which Joseph wasn’t committed. He was locked up in prison for being faithful in the sight of God as well as being faithful to his own conscience.
Whensoever Joseph thought about his dreams he had at his father’s house might be a painful reminder of his past and his brokenness. Our God is so faithful even to unfaithful, how couldn’t HE be faithful to a person who was faithful in the sight of God Almighty? God took 13 long years to make his dream come true. Joseph was just a dreamer at his father’s house but our Lord trained him as an interpreter of dreams during his 13 years of hardship.
May be our dreams look like broken and unfulfilled; be not discouraged. Have faith in God! God will surely make all our dreams come true at HIS own time. Whenever you feel sorry about your dreams, Remind yourselves from the Bible verse 1Pet 5:6 “Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that HE may lift you up in due time”. May the hands of our Lord make our dreams into reality in due time. Wishing you all to cherish wonderful dreams and wonderful life experiences!
…God bless you, Pearly Gates!
